Personal statement: early draft
When I started dancing I immediately enjoyed it as a way to express myself and I became intrigued by how one’s emotions can be shown through just the movements of our bodies. I started off my dance experience with RAD ballet examinations but, now I’m pursuing a contemporary style. It was when studying GCSE dance that I started to take dance more seriously as a career option, I became inspired when I read how some people, dance is an escape and how it can tell a story whether through a two minute solo or a two-hour ballet.
I want to study dance in higher education, because I’m fascinated by the different styles of dance there are and how different they are from each other. Career wise I’d like to be a choreographer, as I love experimenting with new dance to create phrases. I become motivated by other dancers my age and lower, as their abilities can be astounding and the fact that they are the same age or younger pushes me to work harder so, I can be as good or even better than them.
I’m very creative and hardworking, I demonstrated this at the end of my first year of my present dance course, creating my own piece of group choreography that includes four different dance styles such as: contemporary, ballet, urban and jazz , designing and making my own costumes as my piece was about animals going extinct I made the costumes to resemble each animal and it includes the reason of why the animals went extinct for example on animal was hunted to extinction so on the animal skin coloured shirt I painted red targets on to symbolise the hunt. and selecting the lighting to show the different areas and habitats the animal came from, example to show the animal was from near water I had blue lights and water gobo’s. I like to incorporate things I have just learnt or things I am interested in, into my choreography for example, I had begun to learn different styles of dance and I wanted to show that in my final unit. I have very good muscle memory and am a team player; as I can remember choreography more easily than some people, I like to help them by rehearsing with them as it which helps me in return by getting more practice. This year, in my technical classes I am focusing on improving my core strength and flexibility in order to learn difficult steps.
I’ve had many experiences in the performing arts, the first was performing singing roles in two operas; in A MidSummers Nights Dream I was one of Oberon’s fairies and in Fantastic Mr. Fox I was one of the trees. These experiences showed me how things work in a professional setting, such as the importance of being ready to go onstage at the right time. In addition, in year ten my secondary school dance company entered the London youth games dance competition. Although we came fourth I learned that I just needed to work harder and its taught me to be focused and determined. Overall these experiences have shown me how to act professionally and make good use of the time I have for training and to keep wanting to develop with new ideas and skills.
Right now, I am working as a teaching assistant each week as I enjoy helping out and teaching which will then strengthen my communication and teaching skills. I am also a carer to my Grandmother who has dementia and arthritis, this has strengthened my teamwork skills as it helps me help everyone out. What I want to bring to your course is a broad range of skills and the determination to continuously work harder and bringing innovative ideas to the table.
